Trainer tested: wireless headphones

A fitness pro on the best ones for your workout.

There’s a reason why you’ve been seeing a lot more people using wireless headphones at the gym lately. According to consumer research firm NPD Group, the gadgets outsold non-Bluetooth headphones for the first time ever earlier this summer. Wireless headphones have been around for a while, but they’re especially gaining traction thanks to the latest tech advancements. Even Apple is reportedly considering taking away the headphone jack on the next iPhone model, potentially forcing many more people to jump on the wireless wagon.

And since a great pair of headphones can amp up your workout, we asked NYC-based Equinox instructor Gerren Liles to test a handful of this year’s wireless offerings:

"These were the most functional of the headphones I used. I could plug my phone into the wall and move pretty far around the gym and still hear the music. The sound quality was fair, though the bass lacked a little. And the ear piece attachments could stand to feel a little softer. I also appreciated how it notifies you of how much power the headphones have left."

"The great thing about these is that they have absolutely no wires, so you're not burdened or encumbered in any way. I would sometimes forget that I had them on. The sound quality was amazing. However, actually getting it to work was a major challenge the first few days because initially my bluetooth only picked up one side and not the other. The sound also went in and out on occasion. It's a good product and good for training with, but there's something to be said about a noticeable, stylistic pair of headphones that may add to your style. And because they're just an ear piece, you can only adjust volume through your phone."

"These are incredibly fashionable, and the sound quality was good. But they aren't the best for your workout, because anytime you'll try to run or do any quick movements, the box keeps bouncing on your chest. However, I did like how you can easily pull out the earpiece and just let it hang when you need talk to someone or be more aware of your surroundings."

"Out of all the headphones I tested, I probably wore these the most during my casual outings. The neck wrap-around style is pretty cool, it's noticeable without bothering you and the buttons are easy to manage. But I definitely couldn't train with these, particularly because any time I laid down, they'd fall off my neck and pull at my ear. The sound quality was amazing, though, so these are good when you're out and about."
