Love and other antioxidants

Say "Be mine" with the best design-conscious dark chocolates.

Boxes of bon bons never did anyone any favors. A better-for-you option than a chocolate-coated cliché? Solid artisan dark chocolate in designer wrapping.

"High-quality dark chocolate is healthier than most of the grocery store stuff, and definitely better for you than truffles" says Marissa Lippert, a registered dietitian in New York City. "When chocolate is made with good ingredients and not weighed down with fillers, like vegetable oil or tons of sugar, it has more antioxidants. Plus, good, pure chocolate tastes richer and more indulgent." In other words, exactly what chocolate should be.

Lippert recommends going for a bar that has a cacao content of at least 70 percent. And while it may be what’s on the inside that counts, these striking selections all look as good as they taste.

Two bearded brothers make craft chocolates in their small Brooklyn shop. The bars, which are all at least 70 percent cacao, are design-conscious and unique, just like the bros themselves. Wallpaper-inspired wrapping makes them almost too pretty to eat. Almost.

Sweetened with brown sugar instead of white, these Nashville-made bars have deep, rich flavor. Vintage letterpress packaging make them look adorable, but savory touches (like black pepper, sea salt or coffee) reveal an edgier side. Sound like anyone you know?

The card practically writes itself: While most cocoa beans are roasted before being ground into chocolate, these so-called “virgin” chocolate bars are made with unroasted beans, so the flavor is one-of-a-kind. Just like your Valentine.
