How to wear summer makeup

NARS’ lead artist shares her favorite primer, moisturizer, and more

“The mantra at NARS is all about having fun and experimenting with looks that work for you as an individual versus a cookie cutter routine,” says the iconic French brand’s lead makeup artist, Uzo. Based in Los Angeles, Uzo regularly works with celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Olivia Munn, and Kirsten Dunst. Here, she shares her top tips for warm-weather makeup application and how to easily go from the gym to a date.

1. Use a tinted moisturizer.

"After a summer workout, apply a hydrating tinted moisturizer to even out your skin tone. I like this one from the new NARS collaboration with French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg since it gives the skin a fresh glow.

2. Prep with a primer.

"To keep makeup from melting off when it's hot outside, use a primer. It helps with a smoother application and makes whatever you're wearing more humidity- and sweat-proof. Choose one that has built-in SPF as well."

3. Experiment with color.

"People think summer always means bronze, but I love the idea of a spring pastel or blue on the eyes against tan skin. The contrast is striking. A little goes a long way but it still looks fresh and fun. Grey, for example, is just so cool and sophisticated. It’s very modern to use unexpected pops of color.”

4. Skip the eyeliner.

"In summer, it doesn't always have to be a full-on routine. Just put on some mascara in the morning or post-workout and you can get away without eyeliner."

5. Wear a bold lip.

"If you're going straight from the gym to a date, a bold lip is the easiest way to transform your look. I’m really loving the Matte Lip Pencil in Blindfold."
