Where to ski this spring

These slopes still offer snow, even as the temperature rises.

Here's a secret many skiers try to keep to themselves: Spring is actually the best time to hit the slopes. April, and even May, are perfectly fine times to ski thanks to deep snow bases and higher temperatures. You'll find lots of snow but won't have to bundle up as much at these top ski resorts. Often a hat, gloves and perhaps just a long-sleeved T-shirt will do. We found four destinations perfect for your last few runs of the season:

banff/sunshine village, alberta

Head to Sunshine Village, a 90-minute drive from Calgary, and you’ll find plenty of snow that’s been softened by the early morning sun. That’s thanks to its location atop the Continental Divide in Banff National Park. Encompassing 3,300 acres at 7,200 feet, the highest resort in Canada offers skiers varied terrain ranging from long, groomed runs to expert-level trails. Opt for the resort’s Sunshine Snow Pass which can be used from March 18 to May 18, and enjoy events such as “ShredAbility,” an all-mountain scavenger hunt (April 9), and the Bikinis and Boardshorts ski and ride benefiting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (May 14).

snowbird, utah

Easily accessible from most of the United States because of direct flights into Salt Lake City International Airport (and then a 45-minute drive), this resort features Utah’s longest ski season. This year's anticipated closing date is mid-May, snow dependent. With a summit of 11,000 feet, and an average yearly snowpack of 500 inches, Snowbird offers skiers 169 runs over 2,500 acres.

stowe, vermont

East Coast skiers and snowboarders looking to hit the slopes would be wise to head to Stowe, home to Mt. Mansfiel—Vermont’s highest peak. That means it stays open later than most, typically through mid-April on its northern exposure trails, which continue to receive part of Stowe’s average annual snowfall of 244 inches. Buy one-day “late-season” lift tickets, valid from April 4 until the end of the season.

steamboat, colorado

Buy Steamboat’s Springalicious Pass and ski upward of 165 runs over any three days from April 1 to April 10. Colorado’s largest resort features 2,965 acres of skiable terrain via seven mountain peaks overlooking the Yampa Valley. Known for its smooth, dry, and so-called “Champagne” powder, the resort averages 349 inches of snowfall each year. Delta, United and American offer direct flights to Steamboat/Hayden Airport from 12 cities, including Newark, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta and Minneapolis. Ski on April 10 and close the day with beats by Steel Pulse at the Bud Light Rocks The Boat concert.
