The four-time world champion surfer on her sun-avoiding secrets.
For Australian Pro Surfer Stephanie Gilmore, life's a beach. Literally. The globetrotting, bohemian blonde took time out during the ASP World Championship Tour's first-ever stop in Long Island to talk surfing and style.
This week's workout:
I surfed at least once a day, with some yoga poses to start the morning off. The waves haven't been that great so I've been trying to experiment with some boxing classes and a barre class. They use very different muscles from what I use for surfing, but it's great to mix it up and keep it interesting.
Where she feels most at home:
Where ever my suitcase is — usually by the ocean.
What she's totally over:
Sun-damaged skin.
Sunscreen she swears by:
Ella Bache Opaque SPF 30 covering cream.
Hair product she can't live without:
Moroccan Oil.
Style icons:
Marion Cotilliard in Midnight in Parisand Alexa Chung.
Health heroes:
Most surfers or watermen have a great perspective on health and a balance in lifestyle. I really admire those who work hard but also have fun and make time for themselves to enjoy life.
Best insider tip:
Look after yourself from the inside out for the best results — i.e., fuel your body with the freshest ingredients, stay hydrated and be active.
On her playlist right now:
The Bee Gee's Saturday Night Fever stuff is so good. (Laughs).
Favorite healthy meal:
The massive salads at Mother's Market in Southern California or the DIY salad bar at Whole Foods.
Ultimate decadent meal:
La Esquina in NYC is the most delicious gourmet Mexican food, with the absolute best chocolate pudding dessert! I'm claiming best in the world.
Latest obsession:
Quiksilver made a Slayer T-shirt but changed it to Slater (as in Kelly Slater). It was a men's shirt so I cut it up and made it a little more funky, and I pretty much live in the thing.
Chocolate of any kind.
Favorite beach:
Australia's Rainbow Bay because it's in my hometown, and is still the most beautiful of them all.
Three things on her bucket list:
Play in a band to a crowd of 50,000, ride a bike around NYC with Gaga, tow in to some big waves.
If she had a time machine, she'd visit:
Paris in the '50's looked like it owned all of the romance the world has to offer.
What relaxes her:
Playing guitar.
On her bedside table:
Vanity Fair, Interview magazine and Just Kids by Patti Smith.
Number one reason for taking care of her body:
We only have one.
If she weren't a surfer, she'd be:
A travel journalist/photographer.
Message she'd send to the world. (Only catch: It has to be 140 characters or less.):
If you can't rock and roll, don't fuckin' come.
